SYKESVILLE (WJZ) — A video posted to social media shows a Maryland deputy shoot a groundhog as it was trying to cross a road.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on Old Liberty Rd., near White Rock Rd., when he saw traffic backed up.

A groundhog was walking into the roadway, “causing vehicles to stop and creating a hazard.”

The deputy got out of his vehicle to get the groundhog away from the roadway, but the deputy reported that the groundhog was not acting normally.

“Believing the groundhog to be either sick or injured,” the deputy shot the groundhog, and “put the animal down for the public’s safety.”

The woman who posted the video to Facebook says she was shocked, and “did not think that it would take this turn.”

Though she also said she was “sure the officer did the best thing in this situation.”

I’d hate to be a cop. They can’t do anything anymore without someone sticking them on camera. However, in this instance I’m glad they did.

Lil nephew groundhog was trying to cross the road and obviously the officer had some questions for him. It’s hard to tell from the video, but apparently the groundhog was showing signs of public intoxication. Maybe he had rabies, maybe he was hurt, maybe he got a bad batch from the supplier, it’s hard to know. Either way, it’s clear he was not following the officers commands. He tried to buck up on the officer and stick his chest out and the officer backed up a little bit and gave him his last warning. Groundhog tried to call his bluff, took a run at him, then caught a slug to the chest.

It’s been a tough year for groundhogs. First, Punxsutawney Phil gets a warrant for his arrest, little nephew gets blasted on a Maryland highway, and just a few days later, IN THE SAME COUNTY LITTLE NEPHEW GOT POPPED, a groundhog tried to throw hands with a lady. Man, Carrol County, Maryland better get a grip on this uprising.

Maybe the officer who shot little nephew mistook him for Punxsutawney Phil, or maybe he was bitter about being told there would only be six more weeks of winter and it turned out to be sixteen. I’m sure a thorough investigation will help bring the truth to light.

It’s a good thing this officer was ready though. Have you ever seen a groundhog? They bow to no man. They’ve got teeth big as footballs and claws sharp as razors. They brush their teeth with pepper spray and use tasers as alarm clocks. Only a bullet would do in this situation.

We all better stay woke. It’s starting in Carrol County, Maryland, how soon till our groundhogs hear of this rebellion? Our boys in blue can only do so much, at some point it’s just you versus beast.

Will you be ready?
